Description

These Red Velvet Snowball Cookies bring festive cheer to any gathering. They are soft, rich, and coated in a sweet snowy layer, perfect for your cookie exchange.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, plus more for coating
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (gel preferred)
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, white vinegar, and red food coloring until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined into a soft dough.
  6. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough and roll into smooth balls. Place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The cookies should look set but remain soft; do not overbake.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Once completely cool, place a generous amount of powdered sugar in a shallow dish. Roll each cookie thoroughly in the powdered sugar until completely coated, creating the snowball effect.
  10. For an extra snowy look, you can roll them a second time after the first coating has slightly melted in.

Notes

  • For the deepest red color, use a high-quality gel food coloring.
  • If your dough feels too sticky, chill it for 15 minutes before rolling.
  • These cookies store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • Feel free to add a drop of almond extract with the vanilla for a different flavor note.
