Description

Make this rich, sweet, and savory homemade teriyaki sauce in under 10 minutes using simple pantry staples. It is the perfect glaze, marinade, or dipping sauce for chicken, beef, salmon, tofu, and stir-fries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Combine the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil in a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water until smooth to create a slurry.
  4. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce while whisking constantly.
  5. Continue to cook and whisk for about 1 to 2 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to a glossy glaze consistency.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat. Let it cool slightly before using. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, increase the cornstarch to 1.5 tablespoons.
  • You can substitute honey with maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
  • This sauce works perfectly as a marinade for chicken or steak before grilling.
  • Store leftover homemade teriyaki sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
