Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed, divided
- 2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla or chocolate pudding mix
- 3 cups cold milk
- 1 1/2 packages Oreo cookies, crushed (about 36 cookies)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well until fully combined.
- Gently fold in half of the thawed whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Set this aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the pudding mix and cold milk together until thickened, about 2 minutes.
- Gently fold the pudding mixture into the cream cheese mixture until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Take one package of the Oreo cookies and crush them into fine crumbs. You can crush them in a food processor or by placing them in a sealed bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.
- In a large serving dish (like a 9×13 inch pan or a trifle bowl), layer one-third of the crushed Oreos on the bottom.
- Spread half of the cream cheese/pudding mixture evenly over the cookie layer.
- Repeat the layers: add another third of the crushed Oreos, then spread the remaining cream cheese/pudding mixture over that.
- Top the dessert with the remaining crushed Oreos.
- Spread the remaining half of the thawed whipped topping over the top layer of cookies.
- Chill the dirt cake in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving. This allows the layers to set properly.
Notes
- For a chocolate version, use chocolate pudding mix instead of vanilla.
- You can crush the Oreos roughly for a chunkier texture or finely for the classic ‘dirt’ look.
- If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute 1/2 cup of the cold milk with strong, cold coffee or mocha syrup when preparing the pudding.
- This recipe works well in individual cups for single servings.
