Description

Create rich, deeply flavored homemade brown gravy from scratch, perfect for comfort foods, even when you skip the pan drippings. This recipe brings restaurant quality flavor to your table quickly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for deep color/flavor)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour to form a smooth paste, the roux. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1 to 2 minutes until the roux smells slightly nutty. Do not let it brown too much.
  3. Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, whisking often.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the gravy simmer for 5 to 8 minutes, or until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  6. Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce, if using.
  7. Taste the gravy and adjust seasonings as needed.
  8. Remove from heat and serve immediately over your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • For a darker color, cook the roux slightly longer until it reaches a light caramel shade before adding the broth.
  • If you prefer a smoother gravy, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve before serving.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick upon standing, whisk in a splash of warm broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
