Description
Make this simple, cheesy, savory appetizer featuring sausage, cream cheese, and cheddar baked on rye bread. It is a classic retro party snack perfect for any gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground pork sausage (or ground beef)
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 loaf (16 ounces) rye or pumpernickel bread, sliced thin
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until fully browned. Drain off all the grease completely.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until all ingredients are well combined and uniform.
- Spread a layer of the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over each slice of rye or pumpernickel bread. Do not spread the mixture too thickly.
- Place the prepared bread slices on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese topping is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown around the edges.
- Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- You can substitute the rye bread with crackers or small rounds of French bread for a different presentation.
- For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce to the cheese mixture.
- If you are making this ahead of time, assemble the topping on the bread but do not bake. Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours, then add 5 minutes to the baking time.
