Description

Make this simple, cheesy, savory appetizer featuring sausage, cream cheese, and cheddar baked on rye bread. It is a classic retro party snack perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage (or ground beef)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 loaf (16 ounces) rye or pumpernickel bread, sliced thin

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  2. Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until fully browned. Drain off all the grease completely.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until all ingredients are well combined and uniform.
  4. Spread a layer of the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over each slice of rye or pumpernickel bread. Do not spread the mixture too thickly.
  5. Place the prepared bread slices on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese topping is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown around the edges.
  7. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute the rye bread with crackers or small rounds of French bread for a different presentation.
  • For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce to the cheese mixture.
  • If you are making this ahead of time, assemble the topping on the bread but do not bake. Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours, then add 5 minutes to the baking time.
