Description

Create a festive and comforting lunch with this Grilled Cheese featuring a bright, homemade Cranberry Relish. This recipe brings together creamy, melted cheese and tart, sweet relish for a perfect holiday or cozy afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices Sourdough bread
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 slices Sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup Fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens, about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat. Stir in the orange zest. This is your Cranberry Relish. Set aside to cool slightly.
  4. Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  5. Flip two slices of bread butter-side down. Layer two slices of cheddar and two slices of Gruyère on top of these slices.
  6. Spread 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of the remaining two bread slices.
  7. Top the cheese layers with the mustard-spread bread slices, mustard-side down.
  8. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  9. Place the sandwiches in the skillet. Grill for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted and gooey.
  10. Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet. Slice in half diagonally.
  11. Serve immediately with a generous spoonful of the Cranberry Relish on the side or spread inside the sandwich.

Notes

  • For an extra festive touch, use a cookie cutter to cut the bread into star shapes before assembling.
  • If your relish seems too thick after cooling, add a tablespoon of water to reach your desired consistency.
  • Feel free to substitute Gruyère with Fontina for a creamier melt.
