Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens into a relish.
  4. Stir in the orange zest and remove from heat. Let the relish cool slightly.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  6. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer two slices of cheddar and two slices of Gruyère cheese, dividing evenly.
  7. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
