Description

Create a show-stopping Garlic Butter Prime Rib Roast perfect for your ultimate Christmas dinner. This recipe brings gourmet flavor with a touch of playful spirit from our kitchen to yours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Prime Rib Roast (about 5–6 lbs)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Take the prime rib out of the refrigerator 2-3 hours before cooking to let it come to room temperature.
  2. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  3. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper until fully combined to create your garlic butter rub.
  4. Pat the prime rib dry with paper towels. Rub the olive oil all over the roast.
  5. Generously rub the garlic butter mixture all over the entire surface of the prime rib.
  6. Place the roast fat-side up in a roasting pan fitted with a rack.
  7. Roast at 450°F (232°C) for 15 minutes.
  8. Reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (163°C). Continue roasting until the internal temperature reaches your desired doneness (use a meat thermometer): 120°F for rare, 130°F for medium-rare. This usually takes about 13-15 minutes per pound after the initial blast.
  9. Once cooked, remove the roast from the oven. Tent it loosely with foil.
  10. Let the prime rib rest for at least 20 minutes before slicing and serving. This resting period is key for juicy results.

Notes

  • Resting the meat allows the juices to redistribute, making your roast incredibly tender. Don’t skip this step!
  • Use fresh herbs; they make a huge difference in the flavor profile of the butter rub.
  • If you like a crispier crust, you can briefly turn the broiler on at the very end, watching carefully so it does not burn.
