Description

Make classic, golden-brown French toast with a custardy center quickly using this simple recipe. It is perfect for busy mornings or weekend brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (Texas toast or brioche work well)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined. This is your batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter or oil.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the batter, letting it soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak the bread.
  4. Place the coated bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half instead of milk in the batter.
  • If your bread is very fresh, let it sit out for an hour to dry slightly before dipping; this prevents sogginess.
  • Adjust the heat to medium-low if the outside browns too quickly before the center cooks.
