Description

Enjoy this easy, classic banana cream pie that tastes just like the old-fashioned version. We created this recipe to bring joy and connection back to your kitchen. Follow these steps for a creamy, soul-satisfying dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 prepared 9-inch pie crust (baked or no-bake graham cracker/wafer crust)
  • 3 large ripe bananas, thinly sliced
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your pie crust according to your preferred method and let it cool completely.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth.
  3. Gradually whisk in the whole milk until fully combined.
  4. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens significantly and comes to a gentle boil. Boil for one minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Remove the custard from the heat. Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter melts completely.
  6. Pour the hot custard into a bowl. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming. Chill for at least 2 hours, or until cold.
  7. Arrange half of the sliced bananas evenly over the bottom of the cooled pie crust.
  8. Gently whisk the chilled custard to smooth it out. Spoon half of the custard over the bananas in the crust. Top with the remaining banana slices, then cover with the rest of the custard.
  9. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  10. Spread or pipe the whipped cream topping over the chilled pie.
  11. Chill the pie for at least 4 hours before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a no-bake crust, press crushed graham crackers or vanilla wafers mixed with melted butter into the pie plate and chill thoroughly before filling.
  • Use very ripe bananas for the best flavor in your pie.
  • Make sure the custard is completely chilled before adding the whipped cream topping.
