Description
A recipe to make thick, tangy, and sweet cream cheese frosting that closely matches the flavor and texture of Cinnabon’s signature topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream (or milk, adjust as needed)
Instructions
- Place the softened cream cheese and softened butter into a large mixing bowl. Beat them together with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
- Reduce the mixer speed to low. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing until just combined after each addition.
- Add the vanilla extract and salt. Mix on low speed until incorporated.
- Increase the mixer speed to medium-high. Pour in the heavy cream. Beat the frosting for 3 to 5 minutes until it becomes light, fluffy, and smooth. This whipping time is key for texture.
- If the frosting is too thick, add more cream, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach a spreadable consistency. If it is too thin, add a small amount more powdered sugar.
- Use immediately on warm cinnamon rolls or store covered in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use full-fat cream cheese and butter for the best flavor and texture.
- Ensure both the cream cheese and butter are truly at room temperature to prevent lumps.
- Whipping the frosting for several minutes after adding the liquid incorporates air, resulting in the light, bakery-style texture.
