Description

Bake an extremely soft and fluffy loaf bread using sweetened condensed milk for a rich flavor and tender crumb. This recipe is beginner friendly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed to 105-115°F
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm milk and sweetened condensed milk in a small bowl. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients. Mix on low speed until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Add the softened butter. Continue mixing on low speed until the dough comes together, then increase the speed to medium-low and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should pass the windowpane test.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Gently punch down the risen dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a tight log.
  7. Place the dough seam-side down into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Cover the pan loosely and let the dough rise again in a warm spot for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the dough crests about 1 inch above the rim of the pan.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during the last 15 minutes of the second rise.
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
  11. Remove the bread from the pan immediately and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For an extra soft crust, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter immediately after removing it from the oven.
  • Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Room temperature egg incorporates better into the dough for a smoother texture.
