Description

Make this easy, make-ahead red wine sangria featuring festive cranberry, orange, and warm cinnamon spice for your holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda, chilled (for serving)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the sliced orange, chopped apple, and cranberries to the pitcher. Stir gently to combine the fruit with the wine mixture.
  3. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to infuse.
  4. When ready to serve, remove the cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise if you prefer a less intense spice flavor.
  5. Fill glasses with ice. Pour the sangria mixture into the glasses, making sure each glass gets some fruit.
  6. Top each serving with a splash of chilled sparkling water or club soda for effervescence.

Notes

  • You can substitute the brandy with dark rum for a slightly different flavor profile.
  • For a sweeter drink, increase the sugar to 1/3 cup, adjusting to your taste.
  • Prepare the sangria base up to 24 hours in advance; add the sparkling water just before serving.
