Description

This recipe shows you how to quickly cook cabbage with bacon for a flavorful side dish or light main meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set them aside, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.
  2. Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook in the bacon fat for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet. Stir to coat the cabbage with the fat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to wilt.
  5. Pour in the chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender but still has a slight bite.
  7. Stir in the reserved crispy bacon pieces just before serving.

Notes

  • For a low-carb option, omit the apple cider vinegar.
  • You can substitute smoked sausage for the bacon if you prefer.
  • If you like your cabbage very soft, cover and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
