Description
This recipe shows you how to quickly cook cabbage with bacon for a flavorful side dish or light main meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
- 4 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set them aside, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.
- Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook in the bacon fat for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet. Stir to coat the cabbage with the fat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to wilt.
- Pour in the chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender but still has a slight bite.
- Stir in the reserved crispy bacon pieces just before serving.
Notes
- For a low-carb option, omit the apple cider vinegar.
- You can substitute smoked sausage for the bacon if you prefer.
- If you like your cabbage very soft, cover and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
