Description
Make crunchy, golden onion petals in your air fryer with a simple three-step breading process and serve them with a zesty homemade spicy mayonnaise.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large yellow onion
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 1/2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Cooking spray (oil-based)
- For Spicy Mayo: 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- For Spicy Mayo: 2 tablespoons sriracha
- For Spicy Mayo: 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Prepare the onion: Peel the onion and slice it into thick, 1/2-inch rounds. Gently separate the rounds into individual ‘petals’ or segments. Pat the onion pieces completely dry with paper towels.
- Set up the breading station: Place the flour in one shallow dish. Whisk the eggs in a second dish. Combine the Panko breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and paprika in a third dish.
- Bread the petals: Dredge each onion piece first in the flour, shaking off excess. Dip it into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Finally, press firmly into the Panko mixture to coat completely. Place the breaded petals on a wire rack.
- Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (195°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Arrange the onion petals in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap. Spray the tops of the petals generously with cooking spray.
- Air fry for 10 to 14 minutes, flipping the petals halfway through and spraying the second side with more cooking spray. Cook until they are deep golden brown and crisp.
- While the onions cook, prepare the sauce: Mix the mayonnaise, sriracha, and lemon juice together in a small bowl until smooth.
- Remove the crispy onion petals from the air fryer and serve immediately with the spicy mayo dipping sauce.
Notes
- Drying the onion thoroughly before breading is key to achieving maximum crispiness.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary to maintain airflow around each piece.
- For extra crunch, you can add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to the Panko mixture.
